Interpretive Design is … Ernie Tomlinson
Film production has been the heart of Ernie’s professional life since York University film school in 1973. As well as numerous feature films as an assistant director, he directed several short films in the 1970s. In Art Direction and Special Effects into the 80s, his work included productions on both coasts and in Toronto, Montreal and New York.
Documentary and educational films have always been his preferred medium of communication. He has collaborated on major documentaries for National Geographic, the National Film Board, Access Alberta and TV Ontario. While designing educational exhibits from coast to coast in the 80s and 90s, he incorporated documentary productions as key components of several exhibit galleries and centres.
During the years of professional work outlined above, Ernie raised four children and volunteered his time in the areas of environmental sustainability and social justice. A 15-year resident of Lantzville BC, Ernie is also a published author of short stories and poetry.
2004 marked Ernie’s enthusiastic full-time return to the film industry after a long single-parenting hiatus. In the last three years he has scouted locations for several productions, directed, photographed and edited a TV spot and three documentaries, art-directed two feature films and a docudrama for Quebec’s Canal D, worked as DoP on a short drama and a theatre-to-video piece, and collaborated on the BBC docudrama, Fire Mountain (Mt. St. Helen’s).
